General capability and experience
Claire Ryan joined Norman Waterhouse’s Environment & Planning team as a Senior Associate in September 2008.
Claire has practiced exclusively in the area of Environment, Planning and Development Law for the past six years.
Claire specialises in Planning & Development Law and provides advice to local government clients and developers alike with respect to all issues arising under the Development Act 1993 including compliance provisions and development assessment generally.
Areas of speciality :
Claire has experience in all matters arising under the Development Act 1993; Local Government Act 1999; Heritage Places Act 1993; Environment Protection Act 1993; Natural Resources Management Act 2004; Public & Environmental Health Act 1987; Native Vegetation Act 1991; Land Acquisition Act 1969; Freedom of Information Act 1991; Encroachments Act 1944; Fencing Act 1975 and the Land Acquisition Act 1969.
- Prepares Land Management Agreements with respect to the preservation, conservation, development and management of land under the Development Act 1993.
- Prepares enforcement proceedings pursuant to s44, s55 and s85 of the Development Act 1993.
- Prepares statutory notices pursuant to s56, s69, s71 and s84 of the Development Act 1993.
- Represents the interests of local government and private clients alike at mediations and settlement conferences for the purposes of dispute resolution in the Environment Resources & Development Court.
- Appears as counsel in the Environment Resources & Development Court in planning appeals and civil / criminal enforcement proceedings and as instructing solicitor and junior counsel in the Supreme Court of South Australia in relation to planning appeals and Judicial Review proceedings.
- Appears before local government bodies and the Development Assessment Commission.
- Advises on property related matters and in particular on easements and rights of way.

- Admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in South Australia [2002]
