Employment and Local Government

General Capability and Experience

George joined Norman Waterhouse in 2007 after spending more than five years working as a Ministerial Adviser on the staff of the Attorney-General and the Minister for Correctional Services, advising on policy, legislation, political and media issues.

Prior to working in Government, George was an Industrial Advocate for a major trade union, responsible for negotiating, drafting and interpreting awards and agreements operating in numerous industry sectors including local government, construction and mining.

George has served as a Councillor and Alderman (with the Corporation of the Town of Hindmarsh before it’s amalgamation, and subsequently, with the City of Charles Sturt).  Since coming to Norman Waterhouse, George has rekindled his association with local government by advising Councils and other local government bodies on a diverse range of matters including: legislative compliance and statutory interpretation; the roles, responsibilities and duties of elected members and CEO’s; meeting procedure; conflict of interest; and, employment law.  He has also conducted investigations into alleged breaches of Codes of Conduct involving both staff and elected members as well as advising clients on dealing with investigations by third parties, such as the Ombudsman.

With an ability to quickly analyse the legal, practical, and where necessary, political and media environments, George has demonstrated an ability to offer clients, including the Local Government Association and councils across the full spectrum of Norman Waterhouse’s local government client base, solutions that minimise the risk of litigation and/or public notoriety.
