Since admission John has acted for exempt employers and insurance companies in workers compensation and common law matters providing strategic and technical advice on a wide range of issues associated with the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1986, Workers Compensation Act 1971 and Occupational Safety Health and Welfare Act 1986.
Since 1976 John has been a key service provider to many exempt employers, particularly CSR Softwoods, where John advises on the Workers Compensation Act 1971 and Workers Rehabilitation & Compensation Act 1986. He provides strategic and legal advice on a wide range of legal issues affecting the company's liabilities and potential liabilities to pay injured workers compensation under those Acts. This includes advice about the potential quantum of claims and estimating appropriate reserves, the ongoing conduct of claims, industrial advice and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and regulations.

He has presented many papers for the Local Government Association, the Corporation of the City of Adelaide, CSR Softwoods and the Australian Insurance Law Association.
