Maria is a Partner in the Corporate and Commercial Team. Prior to joining Norman Waterhouse in September 2006, Maria practised at a large commercial law firm in Adelaide in general commercial and intellectual property law, with a specialisation in advising on retirement village matters.
Since joining Norman Waterhouse, Maria has developed a highly successful migration practice within the firm. As a registered migration agent (MARA 0745502), Maria mainly assists business people wishing to migrate to Australia and Australian businesses wishing to employ and sponsor highly skilled overseas workers.
Maria is fluent in spoken and written Cantonese and Mandarin and is an accredited NAATI Level 3 (Professional Level) English-Chinese 2 way translator. In the past few years, Maria has focussed her energy on applying her language skills and extensive experience in commercial and migration law to build a robust international business practice which provides overseas investors with a range of services designed to assist them to establish a solid base for conducting business in Australia. Such services include advising on business structuring, advising on and preparing legal documentation, acting in business and property acquisitions, acting as general corporate counsel, arranging work visas for employees transferred to Australia by overseas parent companies and assisting business owners with migration applications. A substantial portion of Maria’s clients are from mainland China while others are from Canada, USA, France and Sri Lanka.
Before joining the legal profession, Maria worked for many years as an arts administrator in a number of cultural organisations including the British Council of Hong Kong and the State Theatre of South Australia.
